MOmMy bRaIn Feedback

Hey Y'all, hoping to get some feedback on the blog... everything is anonymous, I'm going to hunt you down for telling me that you hate hearing about my poopy stories or hearing me whine about being 5 lbs heavier than I'd like to be. Thanks in advance! :)

UPDATE - Had some people saying they can't see the submit button... seems to be only happening in Internet Explorer and in both my browsers (IE and Firefox it's appearing fine). If you can't submit on your browser and want to fill it out - here's the link for the form. Hopefully that will work for you! Thanks again.

Bad Paid for Photos

Took the car today so Jane and I can go swimming later - thus the late AM post.

Also, thus, the fact that I'm basically posting a picture today and nothing else because I'm starving, Jane's down for a nap and I bought a few things for her to eat that I have to pre-prepare so that it doesn't take me 20 minutes to make her a snack five times a day (of which most of it ends up on the floor for the dog).

This is a beautiful picture of my sister and I when we were like 12-ish... I love you Mom, but who's idea was this? Did anyone think this would make a good "over the fireplace" family photo?

So happy to have found this "gem" during Spring cleaning last weekend... what a score! Some people find baseball cards worth millions but this was so much better! :p

Weigh-in Wednesday

This morning I am in need of a full body massage. Scratch that, several full body massages. Had my first AM run today - up at 6:20 and out the door. I have been "off" for the last week and a half as I totally screwed up my foot last time I ran - I got new sneakers and, despite my best efforts to make them work, they were too small. Of course, being a deal-seeker, I bought them off ebay, buying my usual size, and so I couldn't return them. I'm thinking, like they say is common, that my feet are a tidbit bigger post-pregnancy because my extra fatness flattened them out. Anyways, that sucked because not only did the tendons in my foot ache for a week and a half but I totally counteracted my deal-seeking and lost the $80 I spent on my first new sneakers but still had to buy another new pair of sneakers... which just pissed me off because the reason I bought them off ebay in the first place was to avoid spending $200 for my Asics... and now that's exactly what I've done and the whole process has taken three weeks and been a pain in the foot! :p

I thought I was going to die on my run today. I made the mistake of being cocky and starting where I left off almost two weeks ago... doing 4 and 1s (4 mins running, 1 min walking). The first interval, I was a superstar - running at a great pace, lungs good, legs solid, Miley Cyrus Partying in my ears (I admit it, I love this song, whatever). Third interval, I was still doing OK, decided to slow my pace as I could tell I wouldn't be able to sustain it. Fourth interval, 50% dead, had to take a break midway as I thought my legs were going to give out underneath me. Fifth interval, agreed that I wouldn't break no matter how bad I was dying because I gave birth and if I can give birth I can run for four freakin' minutes... yeah. About a minute into it, I was wishing I had a baseball hat on so no one would recognize me if they drove by 'cause I was running slower than a senior on a mall walk and my face was likely so red that I rivaled that chick from the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory who ate the blueberry. Regardless, I did it.

Wanna know what sucks too? I can't run in my subdivision because of all the hills. So I walk down to the main road and run there as it's flatter. No biggie on the way down. On the way back, however, after I've basically killed myself, I have to finish myself off by walking like a half km up a giant-ass hill. This morning I seriously considered driving to the bottom of the hill and driving back up. Yes. I am a lazy exerciser. ha ha ha. Actually, I shouldn't laugh as I haven't completely written that idea off yet. :p

No surprise I didn't lose any weight this week as last night, on his way home from the gym, I got Dan to pick me up some Coldstone. Yesterday AM (if you can even call it the AM as in my mind it's still PM), I woke up at 3:30 (yes. 3:30am) and started working on budgeting because I am so stressed about this whole job hunt thing. So, come last night, I was basically a zombie and do I even need to say the rest... I will for the "newbies"... zombie Jen = eat everything I can find in my house even if it's not appealing at all and eat it in excessive amounts (e.g. dry cereal).

So, I may have actually lost weight but the excess food in my "system" from yesterday is weighing me down (literally)... :p That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Next week I am confident I'll be down another pound. If I'm not, I'm lying about it anyways - as if you'll figure it out! :p ha ha ha. Half-kidding.

Pictures are from Monday - Jane and I went for a picnic at the park. It was awesome!

In Lieu Of...

Since December, it's been common place to find a fabulous giveaway on MOmMy bRaIn on Tuesdays. Well, thanks to the glorious Easter holiday, I'm pretty sure any chance of having a giveaway today is sitting at Canada Post awaiting my approval...

So, in lieu of a giveaway, I thought I'd share my favourite sites for retail therapy... places where I regularly shop online or visit to find out where I can shop online and save $$!
It seems like in the past few weeks all of these "last minute steals" or "today only sales" sites have popped up and, personally, I'm sold... along with a bazillion other at-home-Moms, I'm sure. Not only does everything look too-good-to-be true, but you feel the pressure to buy NOW as items often sell out in minutes! There's no time for the "do I need this?" conversation with yourself, you need it and you need it now before someone else who needs it, needs it now.

Here are a few that I've been introduced to (I'm sure there are a bazillion more and feel free to share - although you may get hate mail from my hubby for doing so):

Hautelook - For cheap-as-heck designer duds and more for you, your kids, your dog and your home! The best part of Hautelook is that everyday there are multiple brands with multiple products - it's fun just looking (like browsing through the mall from the comfort of your lay-z-boy). Better still... get your friends to sign up and every time a new friend makes a purchase you get $10 added to your account for a future purchase! SCORE!

BabySteals.comBabySteals.com - help me. I've yet to buy anything as I always seem to visit too late on days where I's buy something (some sort of karma shopping crap). Updated every day at 9am MST (click here to figure that out). Heads up - the best items sell out in minutes!
Even if you're not buying - it's fun to visit as I've been introduced to some really neat products on this site - check out the Tie Chair! Shipping is pretty reasonable on most items also. Only complaint so far is that sometimes even discounted some of the items seem a little pricey - e.g. a $69 backpack combo thingy last week... that backpack better cook and pack me lunch for $69 a pop.

Kidsteals.com - Yeah, I check this one too. You never know when there's going to be a steal so fabulous it's worthy of a four year pre-purchase! :p

BabyHalfOff.com - Self explanatory. Thanks to Lindsay for bringing this to my attention yesterday... as if I needed any other means to spend money! :p Updated every day at 8am MST.

Etsy - Oh my goodness ladies, if you've yet to discover Etsy or have been ignoring me for the last year, you need to check it out. Prices are ridiculously fabulous, the products are even better. I could spend hours just checking out the cool stuff people come up with... especially for kids. Click here to see the most recently listed Baby products - I know you'll find something you'll love. Some of my favourite Etsy sellers are list in my right-hand sidebar, and we've done several giveaways as well.
Listen To Lena - If you live in Canada, you really should be checking out Lena every day. She posts the best deals and steals from your fav stores and stores you don't know are your favs yet. As a PTPA Mom, she also has fab giveaways (usually posted Sundays) that are worth the effort of, yup, you guessed it, a whole COMMENT! :p
So, that's me practicing my sharing. Don't expect it to happen often as the more of you checking some of those sites, the less chance I'll get what I want... competition is fierce! :p

As far as upcoming giveaways, check out what's on the horizon:

Bean-B-Clean: PTPA Award Winning product for cradle cap - would be a lifesaver with a newborn baby!
Eco-Friendly Fashions from Company Kids - In Support of Earth Day
Moody Mamas Maternity - Fierce Maternity Line is launching at Target
Cafe Press - customizable clothes and items for every occasion

Several Etsy Giveaways coming up from these fab sellers:
Posie and Me
Cloo Gifts
Baby Cake and Lollipop

Lots to look forward to darlings!

UPDATE: Check out Listen To Lena today for info on how to get a free photobook every month! I love photobooks, I do them a few times a year instead of printing photos for an album! Thanks for the tip Lena!

Check out these pics from our little outing to the boardwalk this past weekend - I can't take enough pics of my little Janers!

Winner announced for our Mini Diaper Bag Giveaway - check out the sidebar to see if it's YOU!

The Grinch Who Stole Easter?

When I was growing up, Easter wasn't a "gift-giving" holiday. It was a chocolate eating holiday, yes, but gifts, no. Was it a gift-giving holiday at your house? I'm noticing a new tradition - Easter is the new Christmas. I'm not judging, how could I judge people for giving gifts? Criticizing people for being generous ain't my thang... I'm just curious what Easter is like at your house? God forbid I be the Grinch who stole Easter and my child be the "one" in school to show up on Easter Monday without a new outfit! :p

Growing up we got Easter egg hunts... chocolate eggs, little packages of chocolates, and the odd giant bunny hid around the house. They were awesome. I never expected gifts at the end of my hunt, nor did I need them. So, when I think about future Easter Sunday's at my own home, I envision the same scenario... eggs trailing from each bedroom in a path all around the house with treats hidden under plants, in corners, on window sills, everywhere. I am so excited to hide eggs for my kids - it's like a bazillion little games of hide-n-seek, a challenge to see how good you are (obviously, I won't be putting this plan in place next year...). I don't envision sweaters and video games hidden under plants, that's for sure. What are your thoughts? What do you do at your house?

While we're on the topic of gifts... Jane's first birthday is coming up (in two months, yes, but I'm an over-preparer remember). I've been planning her birthday party for two weeks now. I love to organize parties (see my baby shower) and I just realized that with Jane (and hopefully my future second child), I'll get to throw two fabulous parties every year! YIPEE!

As with Christmas, I have no idea what to get Jane for her bday. I found this Fisher Price Laugh and Learn Farm, that my sister has, on kijiji (same as Craig's List) for $40 and I'm picking it up next weekend. Anybody else have this? Does your kid play with it? Ashley, a blog buddy, said her little beauty Addison got hers for her 1st bday and likes it. I know my sister's daughter Lucy loves her. Any other ideas what would be some good toys for her? I don't want to go all out - I mean, lets face it, Jane's just as happy playing with pots and pans these days but I'd like to get her a few new things, to keep her entertained.

I am so excited about this Giant Cupcake Pan I got for Jane's bday cake... I found this picture (shown left) when I goggled "first birthday cakes" and fell in love (with cake, yes). I found the pan it was made with, a Wilton Giant Cupcake Pan, at Michaels for $49.99 (INSANE!!!) - as if I would pay $50 for a freakin' pan! BUT, I found a 50% off coupon on Flyerland and voila, it's mine! I mean I'd spend at least $25 on a special cake and now I can make my own special cakes any time I want to (or that was the excuse I gave Dan for spending $25 on a cake pan). Regardless, I thought I'd make a giant cupcake with a bunch of smaller, coordinating (of course) cupcakes for people to eat (as the giant one looks difficult to serve). I'm so excited.

I will, of course, provide photos and loads of details post-bday... but we've got some time before then people - it's just scary to think of what else I'll come up with in two months! Speaking of which, today is Jane's 10 month birthday!

Included some pics from our Easter "hunt" - I filled some eggies with cheerios, craisins and broken fruit loops (as a treat) for Janers. I wouldn't dare hide them as with my mommy brain, it's very likely I'd never remember where I hid them all and/or my dumbo dog would eat them before we got around to it.

Cause It Was Fun

Today's a holiday. So my hubby's home and I'm likely taking advantage and spending a few minutes lying on the couch doing nothing. As a result, I wrote this post last night and since I enjoyed it so much last time, I'm doing this fill in the blank thingy-me-bobber.

Today is… Thursday, but technically Friday because I'm writing this on Thursday but posting it on Friday. I'm pullin' an Ellen (for those of you who watch Ellen - ah, who doesn't? - you know what I'm saying).

Outside my window...
it's gray and cold. So far our hottest Spring day was 16 degree (celcius for the Americans), which I must admit was beautiful. But hearing from my sis that it's going to be 27 or something ridiculous in Ontario is just annoying. It's been rainy and nasty here for the last week and it's annoying. Definitely takes a toll on your attitude after a while... makes me lazy and grouchy.

I am thinking...
that I miss real TV. I miss non-reality TV. Remember the Cosby show? Fresh Prince? Friends? Three's Company? Who's the Boss? C'mon people, I know it's entertaining as heck to watch people who are obviously more screwed up than us try to do something insanely stupid (like dance sober) but I miss the stories. Remember the lessons we learned from the Cosby Show? Claire and Cliff were the best parents. Watch the video below for one of my fav moments (who didn't love this one):

I am thankful for...
maternity leave. When I think of the last 10 months, I feel lucky. I know a lot of American Mommas do not get near the time we get up here in the "great white north"... I can't imagine going back to work after 6 weeks, 3 months, etc. I know you do what you have to and everyone is fine in the end but I have just SO loved this time with Jane.

I am wearing...
oatmeal, spaghetti sauce, beef stew, milk, cat hair, dust bunnies and a yoga pant/jacket combo. Everyday I start out clean and after several meals with Jane (where she covers herself, me and entire kitchen/dining room with food) and several hours of playing on the floor, I look like a homeless person.

I am going...
to watch another episode of Modern Family before bed. OMG (yes, I hated OMG or any of these other texting abbreviations until I started watch Gossip Girl again and now I'm sad to say that I can't stop saying it and I am 100% sure I sound like an old chick trying to be young again)... so, OMG Modern Family is the funniest show on TV right now. The Dad (Phil) is the funniest character I've seen in awhile. Your hubby may not think it's funny... or, at least, mine doesn't. I think it's similar to "Business Time" - hits too close to home and they can't handle the truth of it all (all my girlfriends think that sounds is hilarious - the guys, not so much). :p

I am reading...
Oxygen Magazine. This cracks me up. I read magazines written for women who are gym-nuts and compete in fitness competitions. I have no idea why. I read them like I'm actually going to take the tips and put it to good use pumping iron like a champion! :p ha ha ha. It's the reading equivalent to watching exercise shows while lying on the couch (we've all done it).

On my mind...
job. No different that two weeks ago. I can't stop thinking about finding a job. I wish, just for a minute, I could fast-forward to 5 years from now and see what I'm doing and how I'm doing so that I could finally take a deep breath and relax, knowing that somehow it's going to work out (that's assuming in 5 years I'm not living in my car eating hamburger helper out of a Tim Hortons cup).

Pondering these words...
"sexual addiction". Jesse James and Tiger Woods are tools... obviously this is an inclusive statement for any loser who claims to have "sexual addiction". Honestly, the PR person who "discovered" this one was a genius. Funny how no normal, non-celebs who cheat on their wives are diagnosed with sexual addiction. I mean I love chocolate and constantly confess to being a chocolate addict... but if I put on 100 lbs, I'm not about to go to rehab citing "chocolate addiction" am I? No, it's called will power people! Don't even get me started on these losers. I am obviously Team Sandra. If she takes back that loser, then she is not the person I thought she was. And, by that, I mean the person that TMZ and People Magazine have told me she is! :p ha ha ha. Ah, yes, I did take the time to search for pics of the two wiener-heads just so I could post them and write douchebag on their foreheads... I am that cool.

From the kitchen…
the lights are on. I hate it when I get all comfy on the couch in the livingroom and realize I left the lights on in the kitchen. BOOO.

Around the house...
HAH. Lights are on everywhere. I just looked "around the house" and the lights are on going up the stairs too. I used to be so good with the lights, now I'd say I'm lazy but I don't think that's it - I think I'm brainless! :p Like I've said before, mommy brain has made me more like a man than I'd ever like to admit.

One of my favorite things...
taking pictures. I've developed a passion for taking pictures since Jane came along. I just started an online photography course to learn more about my camera - hoping that I can stop having to take 500 pictures to get 20 good ones. I worry sometimes when I post so many pictures on Facebook that people are annoyed. Then, I realize, I don't care. I love my little missy so much and I'll show her off every day of the week for the rest of my life! :)

A few plans for the rest of the week...
Hmmm... tomorrow I'll have to hit up the grocery store since it's closed on Sunday for Easter. I plan on doing a little Easter thingy for Jane - just throwing eggs around the house (not chocolate obviously, just the plastic ones) and seeing if she'll play with them. If I can find a set of bunny ears (not the hooker ones - i.e. the ones girls wear on Halloween being a "sexy bunny") I'd like to do a photoshoot with Jane on the weekend. We're also going to check out Food, Inc. this weekend. Looks interesting. Severely concerned, however, that it may just be the last straw that makes me become a vegetarian... sometimes meat just grosses me out, and by sometimes I mean if I think about it at all. Although, I do like a good Steakhouse... hmmm, maybe I'll be an in-house vegetarian and only eat meat when dining out at proper restaurants (i.e. not Mcdonalds - not that I don't love McDs, you know what I'm saying).

From my picture journal...
yeah, I JUST realized that last time I posted this I did end up totally forgetting to upload a picture. Tee hee hee. I suck. Here's my latest fav - Jane doing her new favourite activity. Staring out the window, laughing and pointing at the trees...

Have a great Easter weekend - hope the bunny finds you! :)

I've Got a Little Granola in Me

Ok. So, since Jane's been born, I'll admit that I'm about 10x more "granola" than I ever thought I would be.

First, I switched to organic food, then I started using all natural cleaners, then I started using all natural skin care products, then I started making my own cleaners and now, hold on to your burkenstocks (it makes me feel good that I don't even know how to spell this), I have made my own laundry detergent!

I found
this recipe online when I was pregnant and was definitely intrigued... although it took me 9 months to give it a shot. Regardless, because I am short on time and just plain lazy today, I thought, instead of writing a post with actual content, I would just share this recipe with you and tell you that it's AWESOME! It smells awesome, it works awesome, it's super cheap and BONUS I can use it on both my own clothes and Jane's!

Here's the
Homemade Laundry Detergent Recipe:

1/2 bar of soap (apparently Fels Naptha is the best but I can't find that in Canada) - I used Sunlight Laundry Soap

1 cup Borax

1 cup Arm & Hammer Washing Soda (this stuff smell awesome - so fresh)

(1) Grate a half bar of soap into a bowl using a cheese grater
(2) Put the soap in the food processor and grate until fairly fine

(3) Mix with Borax and Washing Soda
(4) That's it! Use an old coffee scoop and use 2 tbsps (scoops) per load.

You can find Sunlight laundry soap ($2), Borax ($5) and Washing Soda ($5) in the laundry aisle (usually hidden on the bottom shelf). All prices are Canadian obviously because I live in Canada... everything's likely cheaper if you're in the US. :)

Using a little math, I figured out that for $16 (I bought a few extra bars of soap), I have enough laundry detergent for 240 loads of laundry... which is pretty insane. Again (using that math stuff), I worked out the average cost per load of your regular detergent and the cost per load of this homemade stuff and it was more than half the cost. Seeing as the average new Mom does something like 360 loads of laundry in a year, half the cost is definitely a penny-saver!

Like I said, the best thing about this recipe is that I can use the same detergent on all of our clothes - even with Jane's super sensitive skin! I love the smell too. Between the sunlight soap and the washing soda, our clothes smell really fresh vs. perfumey (from our usual Gain detergent).

The recipe is super easy to make. I thought it was going to be a big process but it literally took me 5 minutes. I put my detergent in snap-top ziploc containers from the dollar store.

So, yeah. I've got a little granola in me... and I'm darn proud!

If you didn't check it out before, here's the recipe I use for homemade all purpose cleaner - that I'm also in love with! I stole it from my one of my fav blogging buddies, Ange's site - Swell Little Life. Check her out - her healthiness is inspiring!

Happy Thursday.

Oh, FYI... this is not an April Fools post. I really do make my own laundry detergent! :p

Don't forget to check out our Mini Diaper Bag Giveaway! Genius idea!
